sscBy Mike Kuchar, Lead Research Manager, X&O Labs

The success of the RPO game falls upon the decision making of your quarterback. Last January, we published our special report The RPO Study and we had numerous request from coaches on how to train the quarterback’s eyes to make the right read. The truth is, the two vital components in making this scheme work are: identifying the read key pre-snap and making the right decision post-snap. So as a follow up to our research, we went back to several of the coaches that contributed to our previous report to provide the drill work they are going to use this camp to teach the decision making involved in RPO concepts to their quarterback. Read this report here.

Introduction

sscWhen conducting our research on RPO concepts, we found that the majority of coaches package their RPO concepts together, meaning they will teach both the run element and pass element at the same time. Then, they will work on developing the QB’s pre-snap read key and post-snap movement key. This comes in the form of constant drill work, which is done on a daily basis. These are the drills below that these coaches are using to train their QB’s eyes to make the correct reads in RPO concepts.

Drill 1: Roy Concept RPO Drill

Slide7

Contributor: Pat Murphy, St. Anselm University (NH)

Purpose: Triple option drill used against two-high coverages that teaches the QB to read two defenders (dive and pitch) to make a run, pass, pass post-snap decision.

Drill 2: QB Pitch, Plant and Throw Drill

Slide1

Contributor: Bill Conides, St. Stanislaus College (MS)

Purpose: Teaches QBs to receive snap, threaten line of scrimmage and get ball out to pitch key.

Drill 3: QB Pitch, Flip, Plant and Throw Drill

Contributor: Bill Conides, St. Stanislaus College (MS)

Conclusion:

It takes time to master RPO concepts, which is why the majority of coaches that use them don’t tinker with them, they major in them. Much of the success of these schemes fall upon the decision making of the quarterback and these are the drills that these coaches use daily to train him. They must be done repeatedly and immediately in camp now in order to reap the benefits this fall.
