In 2011, Temple University finished third in the country in scoring defense, surrendering a meager 13.9 points per game.  Only national champion Alabama and national runner-up LSU placed ahead of them.  The Owls also finished at the top of the Mid-American Conference in seven separate categories including rushing defense and total defense.

X&O Labs presents an exclusive drill series submitted by Ben Albert, the outside linebackers and defensive ends coach at Temple, which profiles all of the drills he uses to teach his players how to get off the ball and get to the quarterback.  These are the same drills that helped the Owls register 33 total sacks in 2011, which was a top-twenty finish in the country.

In the first video, Coach Albert presents seven and a half minutes of his "E.D.D.," Every Day Drills he uses to work with his players.  These are the must-haves for any coach working with perimeter linebackers or defensive ends and include the following drills:

  • Get-off Drills
  • Drills for Hand and Hat Placement
  • Key reads for Outside linebackers and defensive ends
  • Block destruction drills
  • Drills on how to combat double teams for interior linemen

The next three videos consist of over twenty minutes of film, which detail the "specifics" behind teaching the pass rush.  These are the exact drills he used in 2011 to produce a combined 33 sacks on the season- more than two and a half per game!  These videos consist of the following drills:
